As one of Iran’s vacation spots, Shiraz is always full of people from all over the world and Iran. Shah Cheragh Holy Shrine, Tomb of Hafez, Eram Garden, Vakil Complex, Nasir Al-Molk Mosque, and the Persepolis Complex are some of the most popular places to visit in this area.
There are many more interesting places to see as well. Qalat town in Shiraz is one of them. Qalat Village, also written as Qhalat, is 36 km northwest of Shiraz city. Even in the hottest months of the year, it stays cool there.
Qalat is a summer town with houses that are built on steps. It is close to Qalat Mountain, which forms a big wall around the city. The kings of ancient Iran used to walk along Qalat, which has many historical sites, lush forests, beautiful springs, and a cool environment. Still, it’s the best way to spend your free time in Shiraz.
About 7,000 people are living in this nice village. People there speak Persian, and the local accent is called Qalati. When they hold rituals and parties, they dress in Qashqai clothes.
The lives of these people are typical. They work in farming, raising animals, gardening, and some of them even weave. This one-of-a-kind site is a great place for people to visit when they come to Shiraz. A lot of people see it every year, even though only a few people know about it.
People say that Qalat Village is a little piece of heaven on earth. It has trees that are thousands of years old, water springs that flow from the mountaintop, and deep, cool slopes that can make you shiver even in the hottest months of the year. You will see amazing sights if you go up to Qalat Mountain. The views are of the amazing old town, which has a path made of stones and lots of trees.
As we already said, this town is in a mountainous area. The houses are built on steps, and there are tall trees all around them. Old homes are made of stone, clay, mud, plaster, and wood, and they have two floors. The tops are flat. In new buildings, on the other hand, homes have more than one floor and are made of things like stone, cement, iron, and brick. These houses are one of a kind because they are in winding alleys with clear streams and lush lawns.
In recent years, the village has seen the establishment of coffeehouses, traditional restaurants, and fast-food joints, enhancing the convenience for its visitors. Some of the old houses in the town have already been transformed into museums, eco-lodges, restaurants, and coffee shops, enhancing the overall experience for travelers.
When it comes to street food, don’t miss the chance to savor traditional ice cream made with local milk, unique offerings like onion Kashk (a white salty whey product) and walnut Kashk, as well as cooked lentils (Adasi), Kaleh-Pacheh, the famous Qalat Ash, and a variety of other local delicacies. These culinary delights will provide a taste of the region’s rich flavors and culinary traditions.
This village has its special charm that comes from the beautiful mountain architecture of stepped houses and the winding alleys where clear streams flow.
1- Qezel Arsalan Castle: Once upon a time, there was a castle at the top of Qalat Mountain. The locals say it is owned by Atabakan Fars and is called Ghezel Arsalan Castle. The village goes back further than the castle, so it’s possible that it was built in the 1400s. The Anthropological Museum and the Qalat Church are right next to this castle.
2- Qalat Museum: Ramin Baghi, who has a degree in music, opened the Qalat Museum House about 10 years ago. You can see a lot of old instruments and objects, cameras, old radios, coins and cash, embroidery tools, drawings, and more, all for free. Some items in this collection are listed as part of the cultural assets of Fars province.
3- Old Hammam (Bath): The older people in this village think that Saadi Shirazi(poet) took a bath in an old bathhouse there. Sadly, this important site, just like the church, has been destroyed.
4- Waterfalls in Qalat: Three natural waterfalls can be found near Red Mountain and on the fringes of Qalat town. One of them is a little tricky to get to. The little waterfall is less than 2 kilometers from the old texture of Qalat.
5- The Rivers: The Shab-Shotori and Cheshmeh-Anjiri rivers are well-known for their freshness and beauty, especially in the spring and summer. As we already said, you can enjoy the fresh air along the river and see a wide range of wildflowers and medical plants.
6- Pachenar: Pachenar is another intriguing spot in the village, featuring four sycamore trees grouped closely together. On the days of Ashura and Tasua, the locals gather here to light a ceremonial fire, adding a cultural touch to the natural beauty of Qalat.
7- Church: In a quiet alley in the town, there is a stone church that was built during the First World War. Missionaries built the church for Christians in the village between the First and Second World Wars. This church was destroyed because it wasn’t taken care of properly.
Spring and summer in Qalat offer a refreshing and delightful experience, making them the ideal seasons for exploring this region. In contrast, autumn is considered the monarch of seasons in Persian culture, transforming the village with its captivating colors and fragrances.
