Kandovan Rocky Village
Kandovan is in the northwest of the province of East Azerbaijan, Iran. It is famous for its unique architecture, with homes carved into cone-shaped rocks that make for a stunning scene. Kandovan Rocky Village has recently become famous all over the world. There is a list of the Best Tourism Villages 2023 from the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). Out of almost 260 applications, 54 villages from all over the world were chosen. One of the winners at this event in Samarkand was Kandovan village in the town of Osku in East Azerbaijan.
The village of Kandovan is in northeast Iran, near Tabriz, at the base of Mount Sahand. The people who live there live in caves made from volcanic rock. The structures of these homes were formed by nature, making them some of the most energy-efficient homes on Earth. They may be some of the best examples of passive design worldwide.
Kandovan comes from the Persian word “kando,” which means “beehive.” The name comes from how the village looks, with its many cave houses. Before Kandovan and its cave houses became a famous tourist spot, the people who lived there initially had exciting lives.
Archaeological digs show that Kandovan has a past that goes back more than 10,000 years.
Some tourists compare Kandovan Rocky Village to Cappadocia, a popular tourist destination in Turkey.
Two other cliff towns with similar buildings exist in Cappadocia, Turkey, and the Manitou Cliff Dwellings in Colorado, USA. However, these two cliff villages don’t have people living in them. Kandovan is now the only cliff village in the world where people live.
Most of the time, these Karans have two floors, but sometimes they have three or even four floors that are not connected from the inside. People from the countryside have built houses, a home range, a warehouse, and a workshop on these rocks so they can live in them.
Homes with more than one floor and stairs that join them usually have more than one level. The town has everything you need, like a public bath, school, mosque, and mill. One of the biggest Karans in the village is the Mosque Karan.
As more people moved into the area, the town grew, and new cave homes were built to accommodate growing families. At the same time, a system of canals was built to bring water from nearby streams into the town for farming and everyday use.
Because of their unique design, the Kandovan cave dwellings are the main draw for tourists. With only hammers, chisels, and hoes, the homes were carved out of blocks of volcanic ash and rock in the shape of a market. The cave people then shaped their homes until they were the right size and shape, either by hand or with the help of simple tools.
First, a small hole is made in the rock face. Next, the hole is made bigger by taking out pieces of rock at a time. Building a house is a hard job that requires a lot of skill and patience. It can take numerous years to finish. The cave homes all had doors and windows cut out of the same rock as the rest of the building.
Every season has its beauties, so there’s no definitive answer to that. People in Kandovan Village think of this place as a haven from both hot and cold weather and enemy attacks because the winters are long and cold.
Most of the time, mineral water springs with the lowest levels of contamination are used to treat kidney illnesses. This area is one of Iran’s tourist spots thanks to its unique house designs, lush and beautiful slopes, nice weather, organic dairy and honey products, and crafts made in the area. So you see, every season is the best opportunity to visit Kandovan.
