Badgir – Windcatcher

The Aghazadeh House is one of the beautiful and historical complexes in Abarkuh County, Yazd Province, Iran. The two-story windcatcher, also known as a “badgir,” is one of the most significant and charming features of the Aghazadeh House. This windcatcher has a height of 18 meters and covers an area of 18 square meters.

Next to this two-story windcatcher is a pointed dome with beautiful stalactite (muqarnas) work and detailed decorative features. The windcatcher and the pointed dome both keep the room below and the hall of the house excellent and let in natural light, making them a unique mix. 3- Abarkuh Ice House

In ancient Iran, a building called an “ice house” was used to make and store ice on hot days. This impressive building, which looks like a dome, was also used to keep food safe. Abarkuh Ice House in Yazd Province is one of only four ice houses that are still standing. It was built during the Qajar Era. It is 22 meters tall and 64 meters wide.

The Icehouse of Abarkuh has walls that are 3 meters wide and 4 meters deep. The store area is 4 meters deep. The Icehouse has parts like the dome, the high wall, the place where ice is stored, and the basin for making ice.

The older adults who built the building used things like stone, adobe, wood, and lime to ensure it would last until today. Abarkooh Ice House has two doors, one on the north side and one on the south side. The first door was used in the winter, and the second door was used to get cold water in the summer.

This eco-friendly ice house was essential in the past because it was able to make the cold water that the people of this hot city needed. People put mud on the doors to make it less likely that warm air would escape.

4- Ali Dome
